I'm off to the woods for a few days. Things I will do while I'm not here blogging:
~ See my friends. This is always a good way to spend a weekend.
~ Start fires. Stoke fires. Play with fire. Burn things (but nothing that has a barcode - it's a rule). Roast things over fire. I love fire.
~ Lounge in the water while I drink beer or rum and smoke and make kissy faces at my man. For hours.
Okay, I might be lying about that drinking and smoking part - I've not done any of that for a week (go me!). But the rest is true enough.
Did I mention today's my day off and I received not one, but TWO! work calls before 6:30 a.m.? Now you're beginning to understand why I love going where there is no cell phone or internet service, right?
Have a lovely weekend, friends, and I'll see you back here in a few days. Happy Friday!
P.S. And did I mention that Jimi and I fight every. single. time. we load up the canoe and camping gear? We'll be fine once we hit the road, but this getting ready part? It sucks. (And no, that has nothing to do with the fact that I'm taking pictures and blogging while he does all the work...or does it?)

Namaste
(I'm assuming a lot of you are familiar with this story, as Katie is HUGE in the blogging world, but if not, the links are there.)
Katie Granju filed a lawsuit yesterday against two people who gave her drug-addicted son a large amount of methadone, which caused him to overdose. Then they refused to call for medical help, which resulted in Henry's death just over a year ago, at the age of 18.
Today is my brother's birthday. He's 22. He could be Henry. Their stories, they are so much the same. My brother, too, is an addict. My brother has done horrible things to support his habit. My brother had been a very bad person at times. My brother has been really hard to like for a long time. But he is my brother, and I love him, and if someone did something that hurt him or caused his death, I'd fight like hell, too, to see justice served. Because he is my brother, and I love him, and he's a good person when he's not high or chasing a high.
On Facebook, Katie said something about how she'd made the mistake of reading the comments responding to the news story about the lawsuit...and because I could never not go look after reading something like that, I made my way to the comment section, too.
I wish I hadn't. Why are people so mean?
I'm not copying and pasting that bullshit because it shouldn't have been posted in the first place. I just cannot believe the callousness and heartlessness and downright cruelty people are showing toward this woman, this mother. And Henry? To so many, Henry was a nobody. Henry was scum, he was unimportant, he was worthless - not because they talked with him and determined his views and opinions to be unimportant or worthless, no; Henry was an addict, he was weak, he did bad things, so Henry was a nobody.
Now, I'm not generally one to quote from the Good Book, but there's a first time for everything:
"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least among you, you did not do for me.'" Matthew 25:41-45
Even if you're not a Christian, you're a shithead if you don't abide by that passage there. Henry was someone's (Katie's) child, grandchild, brother, nephew, cousin. But for the grace of God, he could've been YOUR child, grandchild, brother, nephew, cousin. He was a person, with thoughts and feelings, who loved and was loved. These people who are being sued, they let Henry choke on his own vomit and convulse for hours in the middle of the floor of their house trailer, refusing to call an ambulance for him. And people are attacking Katie for wanting those shitheads to be held accountable?
It's easy to want to blame the victim, to say Henry was nothing. If he just fades into the woodwork with all the other druggies, everyone can pretend that Henry wasn't JUST LIKE their son, daughter, brother, sister, cousin, niece, nephew. If Henry was just some messed up junkie, there's no correlation between him and Todd, who's the Captain of the football team, or Jessica who's Head Cheerleader. If Katie was a bad mom, if she just turned a blind eye and let her kid become and addict, then there's no way that'll ever happen to the child of the Patty the PTA President, because Patty really pays attention to her children.
Wake up! The drug problem is in your back yard! Hell, it's probably in your bathroom medicine cabinet. But no...better to pretend this problem belongs to the margins of society and brush it away from our sight; shame the "good" victims into keeping quiet to protect themselves - there is so much guilt by association.
I've lived with this fear in the back of my mind and heart for the last few years - a fear that one day I'm going to get a tearful, hysterical phone call from my Momma or Daddy saying my brother's dead; that he's overdosed, or he was robbed and beaten horribly, or someone's thrown him from a car, or he was shanked in jail. Drugs are really bad - they make people do really awful things - and when you've got a loved one living in that world, your imagination runs wild. Brother's currently on an upswing of sobriety, and he's making good steps toward the future. We're all cautiously hopeful...while we're telling ourselves we're fools for being so optimistic. This is the hilly tightrope we walk, those of us who love an addict.
Those commenters said those horrible things about Katie and Henry for one of a few reasons: maybe they've never known unconditional love; maybe they or someone they love have/has an addition problem about which they're in denial; or maybe they're just assholes - you've got to be a special kind of low to direct a bunch of hate and vitriol toward a grieving mother who's only trying to help get a couple drug dealers off the streets before someone else's kid dies. Mostly I think they just can't possibly understand - they can't relate to Katie's grief, they can't relate to Henry's addiction - and what they can't understand scares them, and so they attack.
I hope Katie comes to realize this before any more of those word daggers find their mark.
Try to leave the world a better place than you found it, would you please, friends? Show some love to your fellow humans and remember that we're all fighting our own private battles.

Yesterday was Monday. Today is Friday.
That's how it was supposed to go down this week - no work Monday, Thursday, Friday. But I have to work a little tomorrow; I didn't get it all done today. I'm going to go in early, knock 'er out, and then come home and fix the dryer.
Oh yeah. The dryer. I went after work to buy the heating element. It's $59.65 plus tax, and it's not returnable. The guy behind the counter, who's obviously done this a time or two, looked at me over top of his glasses and said, "Have you done this before?"
I scoffed. I couldn't help it. "Do I look like I've done this before?" I wanted to ask. Or, "I just said 'This is my first attempt at appliance repair...', but sure, I could see how you'd think I'm a pro, what with my blank stare and detailed, expert description of how the hot doesn't work." I didn't really say any of that, of course; I said, "No, I've never done anything like this before" and he said "Are you sure it's the heating element?"
Motherfuck. No, okay! I'm NOT sure it's the heating element! But Jimi said it's the heating element and Jimi's usually right about everything, so I'm pretty sure he's right about this.
"Um. Not exactly? It spins but it doesn't get hot." Again with the expert descriptoring.
"Well, it could be one of the thermostats or the dumaflicky or the thingamawhatsit or the whobamersnagger or the heating element. We have all the parts, and they're all non-returnable." How these people talk to people like me every day without rolling their eyes over and over and over again is beyond me; but then, they exude the same warm fuzzy feeling with their tone of voice, so maybe I'm not missing much from the actual eye-rolling experience.
He flipped over the piece of notebook paper where I'd scribbled the numbers from the label I found on the front of the dryer - one of them was a model number and the other was a secret code to the location of the ark of the covenant, I'm pretty sure. Anyhow, he drew me a picture. It was beautiful, with flowers and shit; okay, I'm making that up - he drew the back of my dryer. And showed me with dark lines where the thermostats and dumaflickies and thingamawhatsits and whobamersnaggers live. Apparently there are lots of things that can break the hot on your dryer. And of course, we'd not yet bothered to pull off the back cover and actually inspect the inside guts of the dryer - Jimi said it was the heating element. I don't know from where he pulled this not-all-that-educated guess, but, as I've said before, he's generally right about most things, so I generally go with whatever he says.
So Mr. Appliance Parts is drawing me a picture of my dryer and telling me why it's probably not the heating element and convincing me that my genius boyfriend is an idiot when it comes to dryers, and I say, "So you're saying I need to call someone who knows what they're doing, right?" He pulled the new, sealed-in-box heating element from the now-unsealed box and showed me what to look for to determine if the heating element was indeed the culprit.
I left certain I'd be buying a new dryer at the Best Buy in the morning.
BUT! But, there is a but! Jimi got home from work, and I told this tale to Jimi, and so Jimi pulled out the dryer, removed the back cover, removed the housing from the heating element...
Lo and Behold, the coils were broken, just like little buddy at the parts shop had told me to expect - the heating element was the problem! YAY!
I'll stop at the shop on my way home from work in the morning, pick up the part, and we'll be back in laundry business before noon. Don't you just love a cheap happy ending?

My Blog Is Boring,
Shit Jimi Says,
This is why I say "Fuck"
If you don't have anything to say...blog.
Sometimes I don't have anything to say but I want to write something anyhow; record the mundane, as if one day I'll want to read about that time Jimi made us stir-fry with steak and green and red pepper and onions and how it was super yummy and delicious and then we went for a walk with the dog and came home and he played his ukulele while I surfed the internet and wrote about just another Tuesday night.
I'll probably want to reminisce about it one of these days...or maybe I'll have a kid one day who wants to know what the Tuesday after Memorial Day, 2011, held for good ol' mom and pop.
Is that a good reason to blog? The possibility that maybe one day someone might care about the random details of my life enough to read about them - even if I wrote them down every single flippin' day?
Yes? Okay then. In the interest of full disclosure, here are other things that went down yesterday:
~ I did the dishes after dinner. All of them And ran the dishwasher. The sink and the counters are clear. (The wok and iron skillet still need attention, but that's Jimi's job so I'm not counting them as dirty dishes and they're not factored into my glee over having an almost clean kitchen.) (Yes, doing dinner dishes after dinner is a rare enough event that I'm blogging about it.)
~ I watered my bonsai tree with food-grade sanitizer. See, there's this spray bottle I keep around for my plants, and it's clearly labeled "WATER". I picked it up and went to town on the bonsai...and noticed there was foam forming. WTF?! Oh, I was pissed. I'm still a little pissed, truth be told. Why, oh why, would you put sanitizer in my water bottle? The one you've seen me use to mist plants for the last year? If my tree dies, I'll be so sad. Jimi insists that because the sanitizer is "food grade", the tree will be fine. I say those trees die if you look at them funny, much less wash them with soap.
~ I at 6.5 chocolate chip cookies. 2 of them were not yet baked.
~ Our dryer is broken. :( (That's a from-Monday event, but I haven't said anything about it yet, so it's going here.) I'm going to try to replace the heating element today because I fancy myself a small-appliance repair genius (actually, someone told me it's pretty easy to replace a heating element on a dryer and if I can fix the problem for $50 myself I'd prefer bragging rights, thank you.)
I'm going to go start day 2 of my 2-day workweek now. I hope you have a lovely Wednesday!

After-dinner conversation
"Meatloaf, peas, and mashed potatoes - there ain't a meal more American than that. You eat that for dinner and Uncle Sam shows up on your doorstep, turns into a hot chick, and gives you a blowjob."
Um.
Okay.
I'll add that to the list of reasons I don't eat meatloaf. Or peas.
