My God.
Now it's like a magnet. I can't stop watching.
I listened on my way home tonight to a story on NPR about a woman who traveled from Tokyo to Sendai via train then taxi, at a cost of $800, to find her Mother and Father alive, in their mostly undamaged home. I listened to their reunion and imagined hugs and frantic kisses - the reporter said they never touched; they bowed to each other, and shared news of the woman's grandparents, who were surely dead. I cried.
And now I'm watching this horror, this tragedy, this sad, sad, so sad thing.
Poor Japan.

I don't have any words for this.
Okay, so I did hear on the radio alarm clock this morning that there was an explosion at a nuclear facility in Japan. I've been watching the news for fifteen minutes and they finally got around to mentioning that. I'd been thinking/hoping I'd made that up in my head while half-asleep.
Guys, I can't do a post about Japan. I don't have words for something like this. I've not watched the news most of the weekend; I've not gone to websites in search of information. The devastation they're showing on the Early Show - I just can't wrap my mind around it. How do you even start to pick up the pieces?
Acte Gratuit is a blog written by a woman who lives in Japan; her husband is a Dentist with the Air Force. From her recent posts, it sounds like they're much better off than many in the most hard-struck areas; I can't process it.
Can we talk about something else, please? I know hiding my head in the sand won't make it go away, but I don't want to be horrified right now.
That's what I wrote this morning.
Now it's lunchtime. I still feel the same way.

So. Much. WORKINGS.
Dude.
I've been changing prices for 3 hours and I'm only half finished. Holy crap! My eyes are crossing, and I'm starting to wonder if I can swing some comp-time for this project this week...I need a day off after giving up my Sunday for this.
Of course, had I stayed and worked some OT the last 2 weeks like I kept saying I was going to do, I wouldn't be stuck with this crap today. But then again, the increases go into effect tomorrow so inputting them before today would've created MORE work, because I certainly would've erroneously billed a customer the new price for an order placed before the date of the increase.
Whatever.
It's beautiful outside. I've been tackling my work slowly but surely all day, in bits and pieces. This morning, I got up early (especially considering I didn't get to bed till 4) and started on my emails and billing right away, between breaks to catch up on my blog-friends' lives, take the pup for a walk, have Mexican food for lunch with Jimi, pick up some puppy and kitty food. I took a break from the price-changing to sit out in the sun and finish the book I've been struggling to get through for the last 2 weeks. (Too many blogs, no time for books.)
I discovered you can read blogs on a Kindle. Now I want a Kindle. Jimi could have his computer and I could catch up on blog-land, and we can live happily ever after. I've gotta get a few more details before I shell out the cash, though - can I WRITE on a Kindle, too? Can you search the web, or only e-book sellers? I want something that does everything and costs nothing.
The only consolation for spending my day working is the fact that while I'm doing it I can sit here and drink beer and pet my puppy and tell Jimi I love him. And watch this awful made-for-TV Syfy movie Jimi's got on. (I security-enabled our network last week and now we can't figure out how to get the Blu-ray player to reconnect to the internet, so we can't watch the Netflix. I has the dumb. Oops.)
Back to the grind. I hope your day is full of sunshine and happy.

Just a few pictures...
On Friday morning, this was my view as I walked to my car:
This picture, I wish I could blow it up and make it bigger and circle all the cool things for you. This is my office:
If you click on the picture to see it original size, you can find:
a turtle lamp,
a dog,
a French Moodle,
zombies and monkeys and lil' homies that live on top of the computer monitors,
my magnetic-letter message to customers,
a Princess Frog,
the box for my WTF?! self-inking stamp,
my 2-sizes-too-big knee-high steel-toed rubbers,
a squeaky crab,
my monster peace lily,
box of pirate bandaids,
a scary pile of paperwork and license plates, and
the awesome Warhol-esqe Jimi photo (people regularly ask, "Is that Jim Morrison?").
Jimi's BFF was in town a few weeks ago and we met him and his wife for dinner at the Egg Roll Machine. This was my fortune:
"You will always have good luck in your personal affairs."
I don't put much stock in the words mass-printed on little slips of paper and shoved inside those sweet crispy little cookies - but the nice, upbeat, positive ones always make me smile.
Oh wait, here's one more:

It's comment love day at FTLOB.

I spent a lot of money.
Like, well over twice what I'd expected to spend.
I bought clothes. Lots and lots of clothes.
4 pairs of jeans *
(*includes a pair of jeggings that I was unsure about - Jimi hates them, so I'm taking them back.)
2 pairs of leggings
1 pair of shoes
4 bras
2 hoodies
4 strappy tank tops with the bra-top
1 dress
8 short-sleeved tops
I needed new clothes; I really did. I've been rotating the same two ill-fitting pairs of jeans for the last 3 years. The only black dress pants I wear are the same ones I bought for the office Christmas party - the one that I went to in El Paso, TX in 2005. The last time I shopped for new clothes and spent a significant amount of money was Fall 2006, after my divorce and when I needed a new wardrobe to go with my new life.
Plus, Kohl's was having a sale. And I "saved" $338 and got $80 in Kohl's cash. That makes spending more than a week's wages a little more okay, right? I'm suffering from sticker shock.
Despite my need, despite my awesome deals, this still totally counts as retail therapy. Can't have a baby? That's cool - instead of spending all my money on diapers, I'll spend it on me.
